Chance Time spaces make their return, throwing in the possibility of more randomness for good measure, while the absence of Super Mario Party's character dice blocks means strategies are mostly based on which items you pick up and how you use them. The game leans closer to the Nintendo 64 releases in the way it plays, with the more interesting boards providing that little bit of extra unpredictability seasoned players will associate with the franchise. In fact, when you start a new game, Koopa Troopa briefly reminisces and gives a nod to the board's history. Meanwhile, all five of the colourful and vibrant boards here are borrowed from Mario Party 1-3, from Peach's Birthday Cake to Space Land. All 100 minigames are taken from the first ten core games in the series, with a particularly heavy emphasis on the earlier entries. The play on nostalgia couldn't be more obvious.
